Teaching Philosophy
_Philosophy Statement
1. Students will be treated as individuals.
2. Students will take an active role in the classroom.
3. Students will receive instruction in an environment that is friendly and with no judgment.
4. The line of communication will be open for students, parents, colleagues, and the administration.
The time is coming for me to prepare to make the transition from student to teacher. I have been thinking of what I would like my classroom to be. As they enter into this next stage of learning, they will do it in a friendly, accepting atmosphere. This will be accomplished by the open communication from teacher to student, to parents, to colleagues, and to the administration.
One of the most important aspects of my teaching will be, "individuality". The students will use that as they become active members of the class. I want them to know how important it is to be who they are. As their educator, I will let them have their individuality. Teaching is like collecting stamps, each one has it's own unique style or personality, but in the end they are all students wanting to learn.
The learning that takes place in my classroom will be the focus for the students to learn, not only from me, but also themselves. My goal is to teach the lessons as if I was one of them. With gentle guidance, I would like the learning that is taking place, be on their level, make it exciting, but learning at the same time. This puts the learning on their level of thinking. I can not think of a better way for these students to see and learn how very smart and unique each one of them are. I will try with my quirky ways, to make the lessons interesting and exciting, instead of them being tedious and boring, like teaching them memorization of a bunch of standardized questions and answers. I also know that those facts need to be taught, I just want to teach it in a way that I am not just a big robot teaching them to be mini robots
My strategy, which I take to teach my lessons, will hopefully help them not only learn the concept that is being taught, but that it will stay with them as they grow and become apart of society. I believe that there is nothing wrong in making learning fun. With using the students as part of the "teaching" not only benefit the students who are learning, but it will totally benefit the student who thinks he/she is just helping, but then realize he/she is actually learning and teaching.
My final strategy of teaching is more learning, for me. I will take the initiative to keep my knowledge up to the standards of the district and state that I work for. The door to my classroom will always be open for the student, to the parents, and to the administration, so they can talk to me freely. I hope to do this by keeping an open mind and the ability to take criticism, not from only my colleagues and administration, but from the parents and the students. If I do not hear from the students themselves, then how will I know if what I am teaching them is actually being learned. I want the students to know that they can come to me and I will not shun them. They will be able to come and be with me anytime that they wish. I want to be able to look at the students and to learn what they are. Together we will take this exciting journey for 9 months out of the year and experience it together. With them giving me feedback, my students will teach me to become a better teacher.
For the parents, the line of communication needs to be very open. For if you do not have the support of the parents, you don't have the student. I will always be learning to insure that your child will always get the best education I can possibly give them.
